Devotion
Devotion to Saint Peregrine for the Sick
A devotion of the Catholic faithful
St Peregrine Laziosi, a Servite friar cured of a cancer of the foot on the eve of its amputation, is invoked by those who carry cancer and other grave illness, and by those who care for them.
Background
A devotion of the Order of the Servants of Mary, to which St Peregrine belonged, and which keeps his memory and his shrines. He endured his illness in union with Christ crucified and was healed, living some twenty further years and dying at a great age. The devotion is not a promise of cure: it asks the intercession of a saint who knew the fear and the pain from the inside, and it is regularly joined in parishes to the Anointing of the Sick, which is the sacrament the Church gives the seriously ill.
How to practice
Pray the novena to St Peregrine — nine days, using an approved text — for yourself or for someone who is ill, naming the person and the illness aloud. Where a parish or Servite church holds a St Peregrine Mass with a blessing of the sick, bring the person there; and if the illness is serious, ask the priest for the Anointing of the Sick, which is not a last rite reserved for the dying but the Church's sacrament for the gravely ill. Keep the prayer honest: ask for healing, and ask for the endurance the saint himself was given if healing does not come.
