DEVOTION
The Holy Hour
A devotion of the Catholic faithful
An hour spent in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, keeping watch with Christ in his agony in Gethsemane.
background
The devotion answers Christ's words in the Garden, 'Could you not watch one hour with me?' (Matthew 26:40), and was strongly promoted by Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque and, in modern times, by Venerable Fulton Sheen, who kept a daily Holy Hour.
practice Instructions
Spend one hour before the Blessed Sacrament, exposed or reserved, in adoration, thanksgiving, reparation, and petition — using Scripture, the Rosary, or silent prayer — ideally on Thursday in memory of Holy Thursday and the Agony in the Garden.
