Here devotion and liturgy meet. The memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday is an option of the Roman Missal and Liturgy of the Hours, and Paul VI in Marialis Cultus traces it to the Carolingian period and commends it as an ancient and discreet remembrance. Around that liturgical observance a devotional custom has grown of giving Saturday to Mary in some particular way. It should not be confused with the Five First Saturdays, which is a distinct devotion of reparation with its own conditions.

On Saturdays that are free of an obligatory memorial, feast or solemnity, ask your parish about the optional memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Mass, or pray the Office of the Blessed Virgin from the Liturgy of the Hours. Where that is not possible, mark the day simply: pray the Rosary, the Salve Regina or the Sub tuum praesidium, renew your entrustment to Our Lady, and read the Gospel of Holy Saturday's silence. Keeping one small Marian practice every Saturday is worth more than an elaborate one kept once.
