Saint Athanasius (c. 296-373), bishop of Alexandria, was the great defender of the divinity of Christ against Arianism at the First Council of Nicaea (325) and through five exiles. His treatise On the Incarnation and his Life of St. Antony shaped Christian theology and monasticism. Named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius V in 1568.
