Saint Basil (c. 330-379), bishop of Caesarea and one of the Cappadocian Fathers, defended Nicene orthodoxy, wrote the monastic rule that still governs Eastern monasticism, and authored a Divine Liturgy that bears his name. Declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius V in 1568.
