Background
Saint Ephrem (c. 306-373), a deacon of Edessa, was the greatest poet of the patristic age, composing hymns and biblical commentaries in Syriac that defended orthodoxy and enriched the liturgy. Declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.
