Background
Saint John of Damascus (c. 676-749) was the last of the Greek Fathers. He defended the veneration of sacred images during the iconoclast controversy and synthesized Eastern theology in The Fount of Knowledge. Declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII in 1890.
