Saint John of the Cross (1542-1591), Discalced Carmelite, poet, and co-reformer with Saint Teresa of Ávila, wrote The Dark Night of the Soul and The Ascent of Mount Carmel. Declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XI in 1926.
