The nineteenth ecumenical council (1545–1563) was the engine of the Catholic Reformation in response to Protestantism. It defined justification, the seven sacraments, the relationship of Scripture and Tradition, the canon of Scripture, the sacrificial nature of the Mass, and decreed sweeping reform of clergy and seminaries.
