Novena
Novena to Christ the King
Nine-day novena · begins The nine days before the Solemnity of Christ the King, the last Sunday of Ordinary Time
Nine days of prayer before the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, which closes the liturgical year. The received prayer acknowledges Christ as the one Ruler of all nations, asks His mercy and forgiveness for our sins against Him, and prays that His kingdom be recognised on earth.
Background
Pope Pius XI instituted the feast of Christ the King in the encyclical Quas Primas of 11 December 1925, to set against the secularism of the age the public and social kingship of Christ over individuals, families and nations. Since the reform of the calendar the solemnity is kept on the last Sunday of Ordinary Time. This novena is a private devotion prepared for that solemnity; the received form repeats one prayer on each of the nine days, with an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be, and the day-by-day subjects below are editorial.
