Novena
Novena for Corpus Christi
Nine-day novena · begins The nine days before the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Nine days of prayer before the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. The received prayer is a sustained act of thanksgiving — for the institution of the Eucharist, for Christ's hiddenness under the sacramental species, for His giving Himself as food, and for the daily renewal of Calvary's sacrifice on the altar.
Background
The Solemnity of Corpus Christi was extended to the universal Church by Urban IV in 1264, and its Office and Mass texts are traditionally ascribed to St. Thomas Aquinas. This novena is a private devotion prepared for that solemnity and is well suited to be prayed before the Blessed Sacrament. The received form repeats one prayer on each of the nine days, with the antiphon O Sacrum Convivium and its collect; the day-by-day subjects below are editorial and the prayer is unaltered.
