Novena
Novena in Honour of the Holy Name of Jesus
Nine-day novena · begins 26 December, ending on the Memorial of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, 3 January
Nine days of prayer honouring the Name given to the Son of God at His circumcision, kept in the days between Christmas and the feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus on 3 January. The received prayer venerates the Name in union with the angel who first announced it and asks, through that Name, for the petitions of the novena.
Background
The Church keeps the optional memorial of the Most Holy Name of Jesus on 3 January; the devotion was spread above all by St. Bernardine of Siena and the Franciscans and later by the Dominicans of the Holy Name Society. This is a private devotion. The received form repeats one prayer on each of the nine days, and the Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus is customarily added; the day-by-day subjects below are editorial and the prayer is unaltered.
