Novena
Novena in Honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Nine-day novena to Saint Juan Diego · begins December 4, concluding on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12
A nine-day novena to the Patroness of the Americas, prayed from December 4 through December 12. Each day has its own petition, and each closes with an Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Glory Be.
Background
The novena honours the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to St. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin at Tepeyac in December 1531 and the image left on his tilma, venerated today in the basilica in Mexico City. St. John Paul II, who canonized Juan Diego in 2002, called Our Lady of Guadalupe the Mother and Evangelizer of America and asked the whole continent to entrust its future to her (Ecclesia in America, 1999). This is a devotional novena, not a liturgical rite.
