A nine-day novena to St. Anthony of Padua, Doctor of the Church, in which each day takes one of his virtues and closes with its own received prayer. The custom is to make it on nine consecutive Tuesdays, or in the nine days before his feast on June 13.
Background
St. Anthony (1195-1231) was born in Lisbon, joined the Canons Regular of St. Augustine and then the newly founded Friars Minor, preached across Italy and southern France, and died at thirty-six. He was canonized within a year of his death and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1946. The daily subjects of this novena follow the outline of Pope Pius XI's apostolic letter Antoniana Solemnia, written for the seventh centenary of his death in 1931. The Tuesday devotion to St. Anthony dates from the seventeenth century.
