Novena
Novena to Saint Michael the Archangel
Nine-day novena · begins 20 September, ending on the eve of the Feast of the Archangels
Nine days of prayer to the prince of the heavenly host, ordinarily kept from 20 to 28 September before the feast of the Archangels on 29 September. The received prayer asks Michael's protection for the Church and her pastors, his defence against the assaults of the enemy, and his help at the hour of death.
Background
St. Michael is honoured in the Roman liturgy on 29 September together with Gabriel and Raphael. This is a devotional novena and is distinct from the Chaplet of St. Michael, which honours the nine choirs of angels. The received form repeats one prayer on each of the nine days; the subjects below are editorial, and the prayer is unaltered. Catholic teaching is sober about the angels: they are creatures and servants of God, and every grace they obtain for us comes from Christ alone.
