In 1973 Sister Agnes Sasagawa of Akita received messages from the Blessed Virgin Mary, and a wooden statue of Our Lady was observed to weep on numerous occasions, calling for prayer, penance, and reparation.

Bishop John Shojiro Ito of Niigata declared the events of Akita worthy of belief in 1984 after consultation with the Holy See. The lacrimation of the statue was scientifically examined and is venerated by pilgrims.
