Apparition
Apparitions of Our Lady of Cuapa
Church-approved Marian apparition · Cuapa, Chontales, Prelature of Juigalpa, Nicaragua, 1980
Between May 1980 and the following year the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared several times at Cuapa in Nicaragua to Bernardo Martínez, the sacristan of the village church, calling for the Rosary, for peace and for love among a people on the edge of civil war. Bishop Pablo Antonio Vega of Juigalpa issued a positive judgement on the apparitions in 1982.
Background
Bernardo Martínez was a poor, unlettered tailor and sacristan who at first told no one what he had seen. He was ordained a priest in 1995 and died in 2000. The apparitions took place while Nicaragua was descending into armed conflict, and their insistence on peace, forgiveness and the renewal of family prayer was heard against that background. A national sanctuary now stands at Cuapa.
