APPARITION
Apparition of Our Lady of Knock
On the evening of August 21, 1879, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and Saint John the Evangelist appeared in silence at the gable of the parish church in Knock, beside an altar with a Lamb and a cross, witnessed by fifteen people of all ages.
background
Two Church commissions of inquiry (1879 and 1936) found the witnesses trustworthy. The Knock Shrine is a national Marian shrine of Ireland; Pope John Paul II visited in 1979 and Pope Francis in 2018. The silent apparition is honored as a sign of faith and Eucharistic devotion.
