Origin
The title honors the Blessed Virgin's patronage of the hermits who settled on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. Tradition holds that she gave the Brown Scapular to Saint Simon Stock in 1251.
Why it matters
The Scapular is a sign of consecration to Mary and of her maternal protection, worn as a habit in miniature and a pledge of perseverance in grace.
