Mary venerated through the celebrated Byzantine-style icon entrusted to the Redemptorist order.
Origin
The ancient icon, of Cretan origin, depicts the Christ Child sheltered by his Mother while angels display the instruments of the Passion. Pope Pius IX entrusted it to the Redemptorists in 1866 to 'make her known.'
Why it matters
The image teaches confident recourse to Mary's unfailing intercession in every need.
