Brought to New Orleans by the Ursuline nuns in the early nineteenth century, the devotion grew after the city was spared a great fire and after the unexpected American victory at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, attributed to Mary's intercession.

The title honors Mary's ready and powerful help in urgent need, encouraging confident recourse to her in every danger.
