Pope St. Pius V established the feast in 1573 in thanksgiving for the Christian victory at the Battle of Lepanto (October 7, 1571), attributed to the prayer of the Rosary.
theological Significance
The Rosary is a Christ-centered prayer, meditating on the mysteries of Christ's life in the company of his Mother. Pope John Paul II added the Luminous Mysteries in 2002.
