Saint Peter, chief of the Apostles, was appointed by Christ as the rock on which the Church is built (Matthew 16:18) and the first Bishop of Rome. He led the apostolic community after Pentecost and was martyred in Rome under Nero around AD 64; his tomb lies beneath the high altar of St. Peter's Basilica.
