Traditional Catholic Prayers - 33 Prayers With Their History
A “lorica” was a prayer worn like armour. Tradition says St. Patrick sang this one on his way to confront the High King of Ireland at Tara. Also prayed on: Prayer for Strength The three theological virtues put into words — short acts the Church has taught for generations. Best for: Doubt — choosing to believe when you do not feel it O my God, I firmly believe that You are one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe that Your divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the holy Catholic Church teaches, because You have revealed them, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. Amen. Source: Traditional act of the theological virtue of faith The acts of faith, hope and love were taught in Catholic catechisms for centuries as short daily prayers. Faith, the Catechism says, is “a personal adherence of the whole man to God who reveals himself” (CCC 176). Best for: Discouragement and the temptation to despair O my God, relying on Your almighty power and infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of Your grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen. Source: Traditional act of the theological virtue of hope Hope, the Catechism teaches, “keeps man from discouragement; it sustains him during times of abandonment” (CCC 1818). This act rests that hope on God’s power and promises, not on how things look. Best for: Forgiving someone who hurt you, and healing a marriage or friendship O my God, I love You above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because You are all good and worthy of all my love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of You. I forgive all who have injured me and ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Amen. Source: Traditional act of the theological virtue of charity The act of love joins the two great commandments and adds forgiveness given and asked. Many Catholics pray it with the acts of faith and hope as part of morning prayer. Also prayed on: Prayer for Forgiveness , Prayer for Jealousy and Envy , Prayer for Marriage Prayers for those who have died, prayed at funerals, at gravesides and in November. Best for: Praying for someone who has died — at the grave, on an anniversary, in November grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
