Catholics of the Ge'ez tradition in Eritrea long formed part of the Ethiopian Catholic metropolitan Church. After Eritrea's independence, and in recognition of the distinct situation of its eparchies, Pope Francis in January 2015 erected the Eritrean Catholic Church as a metropolitan Church sui iuris, with the Metropolitan Archeparchy of Asmara and the eparchies of Barentu, Keren and Segheneiti.

The Church celebrates the Divine Liturgy in the Alexandrian tradition in Ge'ez, the ancient liturgical language of the region. Though small in number, it carries a large share of the country's schools, clinics and works of charity, and its bishops have spoken publicly for the dignity and freedom of the Eritrean people.
