biography
Saint Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787), Bishop and Doctor of the Church, abandoned a legal career to become a priest and founded the Redemptorists to preach to the poor and abandoned. A gentle confessor and the father of modern moral theology, he wrote enduring works of devotion such as The Glories of Mary. He was canonized in 1839.
