Saint Ambrose (c. 340-397), Bishop of Milan and Doctor of the Church, was a Roman governor acclaimed bishop by the people while still a catechumen. A powerful preacher whose words helped convert Saint Augustine, he defended the Church's freedom against imperial power and enriched the liturgy with hymns. He is one of the four great Latin Doctors.
