Saint Angela Merici (1474-1540) founded the Company of Saint Ursula (the Ursulines) at Brescia, the first teaching order of women in the Church, dedicated to the Christian education of girls. A Franciscan tertiary of deep prayer, she pioneered a consecrated life lived in the world before such forms were common.
