A saint of the Catholic Church
biography
Saint Anthony of Egypt (c. 251-356), often called the Father of Monasticism, gave away his inheritance and withdrew to the Egyptian desert to live in prayer and asceticism, where he was famously tempted by demons. His example drew countless others to the solitary life, and his biography by Saint Athanasius spread monasticism throughout the Church.
