Saint Augustine of Canterbury (died c. 604) was the Benedictine prior sent by Pope Saint Gregory the Great to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons. He baptized King Ethelbert of Kent, established his see at Canterbury, and became the first Archbishop of Canterbury. He is honored as the Apostle of the English.
