Saint Benedict of Nursia
biography
Saint Benedict (c. 480-547) is the patriarch of Western monasticism. His Rule for monasteries — 'pray and work' — became the foundational document for monastic life in Europe and shaped Western Christian culture. Pope Paul VI named him patron of Europe in 1964.
