Saint Cyril of Alexandria (c. 376-444), Patriarch and Doctor of the Church, led the Council of Ephesus in 431 that defended the unity of Christ and proclaimed the Blessed Virgin Mary as Theotokos, the Mother of God. His writings are a cornerstone of orthodox Christology against the Nestorian error.
