Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1552), one of the first companions of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and a co-founder of the Society of Jesus, was the great missionary to India, the East Indies, and Japan, baptizing tens of thousands. He died off the coast of China and is honored as patron of the missions.
