Saint Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was a German Benedictine abbess, mystic, composer, and polymath who recorded her visions in works such as the Scivias. She corresponded with popes and emperors, composed sacred music of striking beauty, and wrote on theology, medicine, and the natural world. Pope Benedict XVI named her a Doctor of the Church in 2012.
