Saint Jane Frances de Chantal (1572-1641), a widowed noblewoman and mother, founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary with Saint Francis de Sales, welcoming women whom other orders turned away. Her deep friendship with Francis and her own gentle, courageous holiness made her one of the great spiritual figures of her age.
