Saint John the Baptist was the prophet of the Most High, kinsman of the Lord Jesus, and the immediate precursor of the Messiah. Born of Zechariah and Elizabeth, he preached repentance in the wilderness of Judea and baptized Jesus in the Jordan. Imprisoned and beheaded by Herod Antipas, Jesus said of him: 'Among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist' (Matthew 11:11).
