biography
Saint Lorenzo Ruiz (c. 1600-1637) was a Filipino layman, husband, and father who fled to Japan and was caught up in the persecution there. Subjected to brutal torture at Nagasaki, he declared he would die a thousand deaths for God rather than renounce his faith. He is the first canonized Filipino saint, raised to the altars in 1987.
