Saint Maria Goretti (1890-1902) was an Italian peasant girl who, at the age of eleven, was fatally stabbed while resisting an assault and who forgave her attacker before she died. Canonized in 1950 by Pope Pius XII, she is honored as a martyr of purity and a model for the young.
