Saint Peter Damian (c. 1007-1072), Benedictine monk, cardinal, and Doctor of the Church, was a fearless reformer who battled clerical corruption and laxity in the eleventh century. A hermit at heart called repeatedly into the Church's service, he combined austere holiness with vigorous writing in defense of discipline and the papacy.
