Saint Pope John XXIII (1881-1963), 'the Good Pope,' was a warm and humble pastor who unexpectedly convened the Second Vatican Council to open the Church to a new era of evangelization. His encyclicals Mater et Magistra and Pacem in Terris addressed social justice and peace. He was canonized in 2014.
