Saint Raymond of Penafort (c. 1175-1275), a Dominican friar and the foremost canonist of his age, compiled the Decretals of Gregory IX and wrote a celebrated manual for confessors. A preacher to Christians and Muslims and a friend of Saint Thomas Aquinas, he is the patron of canon lawyers.
