Saint Stephen, one of the seven deacons chosen by the Apostles, was the first martyr of the Church (the protomartyr). Filled with the Holy Spirit, he preached boldly and was stoned to death, praying for his persecutors as he died (Acts 6-7). Saul of Tarsus stood by, consenting.
