biography
Saint Thomas Becket (1118-1170), Archbishop of Canterbury, defended the liberty of the Church against King Henry II of England and was murdered by the king's knights in his own cathedral. Canonized in 1173, his shrine became one of the great pilgrimage destinations of medieval Europe.
