biography
Saint Valentine was a third-century Roman priest (and, by some accounts, a bishop of Terni) martyred under the emperor Claudius II, traditionally for aiding persecuted Christians and witnessing marriages. He was beheaded around 269 and buried on the Via Flaminia. His feast has long been associated with devoted love and the blessing of engaged couples.
