The Jesus Prayer
A practice of the spiritual life
The continual, rhythmic invocation of the holy Name of Jesus, a treasure of the Christian East: 'Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'
instructions
Sit quietly and pray the words slowly and repeatedly, often joined to the breath, letting the prayer descend from the lips to the mind and finally to the heart. The aim, taught in the Philokalia and The Way of a Pilgrim, is to fulfill St. Paul's call to 'pray without ceasing,' so that the Name of Jesus becomes one's constant inner companion. The Catechism commends it as a way of prayer 'always possible.'
