A private devotion associated with Sister Justine Bisqueyburu, a Daughter of Charity, in 1840 — the same community to which St. Catherine Labouré, who received the Miraculous Medal ten years earlier, belonged. Blessed Pius IX approved the devotion in 1863 and again in 1870. Unlike a true scapular of a religious order, it is not two joined squares of cloth and carries no enrolment: it is simply blessed and used.

Have the green scapular blessed by a priest — no enrolment or investiture is required. Wear it, or carry it in your clothing, or place it quietly in the room or among the belongings of the person for whom you are praying. Each day pray the words that appear on it: 'Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.' If the person for whom it is intended does not pray, the one who gave it says the prayer daily on their behalf.
